I was having trouble sleeping after having twins. This was normal during the “waking†months for them. But by their 18 month birthday, the twins were finally sleeping 11-12 hours a night. I WASN’T! I could just not shut my brain off anymore. It was getting so old being drowsy with no energy during the day. - At risk of sounding overly dramatic, this book has literally changed my life. I bought this book after suffering from major insomnia every night for three months after stopping prescription sleep medication. I had tried everything- OTC medication, herbs, CBT-I and sleep restriction therapy, etc, and I had only succeeded in making my sleep anxiety worse. I was exhausted and felt like my anxiety about sleep had taken control of my life. Then I found this book. It taught me to accept my insomnia and stop fighting it, and I was able to change bedtime into something I looked forward to rather than something I dreaded. The mindfulness exercises helped me to feel at peace even when I didn't sleep, and after just over a month I have gone from being lucky to get 4 hours of sleep to getting 7-8 hours of sleep a night. Not only that, but the mindset the book teaches has helped me in managing my anxiety during the day as well, so I feel better overall than I ever did with years of therapy and medication.

- This book changed my life. Thanks to reading it, I no longer have chronic insomnia. Even though I still have the occasional bad night's sleep, I am much better able to cope with it, without allowing it become a full blown problem once again. "Cure your insomnia by learning to accept it and do nothing about it." It sounded weird to me at first, but it totally worked for me. The tactics I learned in this book were also helpful in other stressful aspects of my life. I recommend it!
- I'm a chronic on again off again insomniac and have tried everything from CBT therapy to pills, etc. It wasn't until I found The Sleep Book that I truly learned that we harness the power within ourselves to overcome this sometimes dreadful ordeal. I spent years struggling and fighting with the feelings that came up at night and lived in fear with the thought that poor sleep (no sleep) was now a reality that I had to deal with for the rest of my life.
After a recent relapse of insomnia from extreme jet lag, I fell back into the trap and spent weeks with no sleep and heightened anxiety. I came across this book and by the second day of reading I was already back to sleeping soundly again. Learning to mindfully observe the present and accept whatever thoughts, fears, and sensations creep up at night are key and what the book teaches you. It can seem daunting at first, and it honestly is. I mean, who wants to sit and accept the thoughts and feeling they've been trying so hard to avoid all this time? But, with practice and patience it gets easier over time.
I have "relapsed" a night or two and fallen back into negative thinking, but the book addresses this and guides you back on the right path. When sleeplessness does return, the book can be used as a "tune up" to get you back on track.
Highly recommended for anyone who is ready to get their life back. - Wonderful book about how to come to peace with unwanted feelings and thoughts which can keep you awake. The ACT method can be applied well to the rest of life too, not just sleep. I'm so grateful for this book and the technique. I now consider myself a former insomniac. I rarely have trouble sleeping anymore, but when I do, I'm not upset by it anymore - I just use this technique and I'm fine. I should add that this really is different from all of the other sleep books. It teaches you how to confront the insomnia head on - harder at first, but if you stick with it, it's the long-term solution. There are many more reviews for this book on the UK site. Don't lose hope. You'll get through this too, just like I did.
- I am so glad I read this wonderful book! A very simple approach used by Dr.Meadows not only helped me sleep better, but also readjusted my attitude to life in general. Now I sleep peacefully every night. If sleep eludes me, I just use the simple techniques and drift back to sleep.
Also, I use this book when I need to get into a balanced mood if I face a stressful situation. It is a tremendous help!

The steps and techniques in this book are sound. Just knowing to accept and not resist insomnia was worth the money!
