"I just finished relaxing with The Repeat Year and have been delighted reading it. I'm amazed by how Lochen does SO MUCH. Moments of the book reminded me of Audrey Niffenberger and The Time Traveler's Wife while other moments recalled Ken Grimwood's Replay. Certainly, the book is more concerned with real human emotion and choice rather than sci-fi conceits or theories, but Lochen pulls the best from so many genres that this astutely literary book seems ideal for a variety of audiences.

What I appreciated most was what was at stake. Yes, there's the seemingly central dilemma of Phil and Olive's relationship, but the questions about love, commitment, joy, desire, and faith are complicated and deepened by the relationships around this central one. Olive's mother's relationship was the most intriguing to me, how emotional stakes are drawn and re-drawn. The reality of illness, loss, injury, horror-- but also the reality of love, devotion and hope-- are layered together, until the book's plot summons up possible answers to our biggest questions: What is this life for? What is our purpose here? What am I capable of? Lochen doesn't neatly package any answers, but she gives us opportunity to see possibilities, and to gather in ourselves our own responses."

The Repeat Year A Novel Andrea Lochen 9780425263136 Books Reviews

  • Life normally doesn't come with "do-overs" or second chances, but Olive Watson and Sherry Witan are given the opportunity to relive one year, 2011. Will they be able to make the most of this second chance or will they make the same mistakes all over again in The Repeat Year by Andrea Lochen.

Olive Watson is a young twenty-something. She's relatively debt-free, has a well-paying job as a nurse in the intensive care unit at a local hospital. She has close friends, a loving boyfriend, and is close to her mother and brother. Olive has been dating Phil for almost four years, but a series of incidents led to a separation then breakup. This was followed by her mother's engagement announcement and remarriage, which Olive doesn't take very well since it's only been a few short years after her father's death. Olive goes to bed on New Year's Eve 2011 in what was admittedly the worst year of her life after the year her father died. She expects to awaken on January 1, 2012 but awakens to January 1, 2011. At first she thinks she's crazy and just experiencing a weird deja vu moment, but she quickly learns that she is repeating 2011 . . . her nightmare year. Fortunately, there's someone to provide her with a little guidance, her mother's friend - Sherry Witan. Sherry tells Olive that she isn't quite sure why these repeat years or second chances are offered, but she's being given an opportunity to change the mistakes of the past and hopefully move forward to a better year.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started reading The Repeat Year. At first I thought it was going to be like the movie Groundhog Day with Bill Murray, but this isn't repeating the same day over-and-over to get it right. Olive is forced to relive an entire year and hopefully make better choices. After I overcame my preconceived notions of what to expect, I actually enjoyed The Repeat Year. Olive and Sherry arenĂ¢€™t perfect women. They are simply people that have made mistakes, some large, some small, and some life-changing. But unlike most of us, they've been allowed the opportunity to correct those mistakes, stop being judgmental (of themselves more so than anyone else) and to accept life and love with all of the inherent flaws. I found The Repeat Year to be a fast-paced read about self-discovery, acceptance, and tolerance. The characters were well developed and quite realistic. If you want a great read for a lazy afternoon, then I suggest The Repeat Year. Ms. Lochen has provided a story that offers a little bit of romance, a little bit of humor, some soul searching, and some family drama in an entertaining package.

  • A brilliantly crafted tale with complex characters true to reality with an enticing twist. Lochen creates a compelling protagonist in Olive Watson, an ICU nurse who is able to relive a year for all its blessings and its curses. While this time warp has been explored in other novels (The Time Traveler's Wife comes to mind) Lochen makes it all her own as Olive navigates the murkey waters of changing too much or not changing enough. The magical twist of fate is difficult for both reader and Olive to grasp at the outset; however as Olive comes to terms with her fate, the reader travels with her and begins to accept this repeat year for what it is, a second chance at life (for her patients), love (for herself and her family) and forgiveness. I found myself rooting for Olive as I progressed through my own journey with Lochen's characters. Lochen created characters that are just as complex as they are fascinating. Sherry, not the ideal guide for a repeat year is intruguing and as her secrets are revealed, we begin to understand her jaded outlook on life. All of them are lovable for their humanity, imperfections and all. While I can't imagine beating the book (as is often the case) the novel reads like this summer's hit rom-com and I would love to see it on the big screen! Looking for more from this young novelist!
  • The concepts in the novel were not fully developed. The characters were not completely revealed and often it was difficult to know where they were coming from. The plot was weak. Overall not a worthy read.
  • This is a wonderful debut novel by Lochen. If you buy ONE book this summer this is the one to purchase! The premise of a woman who is given a cosmic do over to relive the last year of her life is at once engrossing and intriguing. The main character Olive Watson is someone you will cheer for and Olive's time travel "guide" Sherry has just the right amount of humor and oddity yo keep you turning the pages at a feverish pace. "What happens next?", you will ask excitedly as you sit out on your deck or on the beach enjoying a cold drink and a great book! Really looking forward to Andrea Lochen's second novel. I know it will be amazing!
