"The book of Romans has been the subject of numerous commentaries, many of them good, some of them great. I would rank John Brown's on the same level as Charles Hodge's and John Murray's as being among the best. Originally published in 1857, John Brown provides an in-depth verse-by-verse exposition of Paul's letter. Although written by a Reformed thinker (and hence from a Reformed perspective), he provides a host of theological (and practical) insights from which the serious Bible student (no matter what his or her theological perspective) can profit.

While the paragraphs tend to be long and the writing scholarly, it is hardly tedious. In fact, it reads rather well and is certainly clear. Moreover, Brown is not above giving practical and everyday examples to help make his point. Although this is not a commentary for the beginner, it is definitely one from which an intermediate student (and certainly a scholar) can profit. While I personally have used Murray more than Brown, I do refer to his commentary frequently in my study of Romans, certainly as often as I do Hodge."

  • John Brown originally published his commentary of Romans more than 150 years ago (1857). Like Charles Hodge's and John Murray's, it is one of the best. Although written from a Reformed perspective, he provides a host of theological (and practical) insights from which serious Bible students of all theological perspectives can profit.

Even though the writing is scholarly and the paragraphs long, the commentary isn't tedious. It reads well and is certainly clear. Moreover, Brown is willing to give practical and everyday examples to help make his point. This is definitely a commentary from which an intermediate student (and certainly a scholar) can profit. While I have used Murray more than Brown, I refer to his commentary frequently in my study of Romans, certainly as often as I do Hodge.
